While the holidays add joy and excitement to the long winter months, they also bring dangers for our pets. There are many indoor and outdoor toxins that your pet can access at this time of year. Here are a few of the most toxic holiday plants to look out for, so you can keep your pets healthy and safe this holiday season.

POINSETTIAS: NOT POISONOUS, BUT NOT NICE

Despite popular belief, poinsettias do not usually poison a pet. That doesn’t mean they’re good to eat, though. If you pet eats some leaves from a poinsettia, they may have gastrointestinal upset, such as vomiting and diarrhea, decreased appetite, or upset stomach, but these symptoms often go away without medical intervention. If your pet’s signs of illness persist for more than 24 hours, it is recommended that you contact your veterinarian.

LILIES: DEATHLY FOR CATS

Lilies are commonly used in floral arrangements, but did you know that just one or two bites of a lily can cause acute kidney failure in cats? Even the plant’s pollen is poisonous, and so is the water the plant sits in. Keep lilies out of the house. Make sure you thoroughly inspect any bouquets your guests bring in, as lilies are often included in holiday arrangements.

HOLLY AND MISTLETOE: FESTIVE BUT FATAL

Holly and mistletoe are common holiday decorations, but both can cause problems for pets. If a pet eats English holly, it can result in severe gastrointestinal upset, thanks to the spiny leaves and potentially toxic substances found in the plant – both leaves and berries. A pet that has eaten holly will smack their lips, drool, and shake their head excessively due to irritation from the spiny leaves.

Mistletoe is also dangerous. Usually it is hung high, where it is out of reach for pets. But accidents happen! If a pet eats a small bit of mistletoe, you will see mild signs of gastrointestinal irritation. If they eat large amounts of mistletoe, they may collapse, have difficulty walking, have seizures, and potentially even die. It is safest to avoid using fresh holly and mistletoe to decorate indoors if you have a pet.

ORNAMENTAL YEWS: DANGEROUS FOR PETS AND HUMANS

Yews have become a popular addition to holiday wreaths: they look festive, with short, green needles and bright red berries. However, all parts of this evergreen contain toxins that target the heart. If your pet (or you!) ingests any part of this plant, they can develop stomach upset, an abnormal heart rate, low blood pressure, and potentially even coma and death.

WHAT SHOULD YOU DO IF YOUR PET EATS A TOXIC PLANT?

The holidays can be filled with busy schedules, travel, house guests, and other activities that alter a pet parent and dog’s routine. In these situations, the most cautious household may still find out their dog ingested a potentially toxic holiday plant.

Keep these flowers out of reach and consider pet-safe alternatives like Easter cacti or non-toxic flowers such as roses, sunflowers, or orchids. All parts of the lily are extremely toxic to cats so keep these out of the house, as even a bit of pollen on fur can potentially be fatal.

HOT CROSS BUNS AND UNCOOKED DOUGH

Hot cross buns are a beloved Easter tradition, but the raisins and currants often found in these tasty treats can be toxic to pets if ingested, even in small quantities. Additionally, uncooked dough can cause alcohol poisoning and can expand in your pet’s stomach, causing bloating, discomfort, and potentially dangerous complications. Keep these treats securely stored away from curious pets and dispose of any uncooked dough safely.

EASTER FEASTS

Easter feasts are a highlight of the holiday, but some traditional foods can be harmful to pets if consumed. Ham and turkey bones, for example, can splinter and cause choking, gastrointestinal blockages, or internal injuries if ingested by pets. Chewing on bones can cause painful tooth fractures. Avoid feeding bones to pets and be mindful of other festive foods that may be too rich or fatty for their digestive systems, potentially landing them in hospital with a case of pancreatitis. And don’t forget to keep food waste away from your curious pet!

PLASTIC TOYS AND EASTER GRASS

However, six years later, Ozzie was found alive and well in a neighboring town. A microchip implanted in Ozzie helped identify him, leading to a joyous reunion.

The Saga of Jacob the Dog

Jacob, a playful pup with a mischievous twinkle in his eye, wandered away from his yard one sunny afternoon, leaving his owners frantic with worry. The Facts About Canine Infectious Respiratory Disease Complex (Kennel Cough)

If you follow the news, you have no doubt heard something about “kennel cough”, a respiratory virus affecting dogs, particularly in the United States. Reported symptoms include coughing, sneezing, nasal or eye discharge, and lethargy, with some cases leading to pneumonia.

The amount of media coverage of this sickness can be concerning for pet owners. Your pet is a member of the family. You want to keep your pet safe and dread the thought of anything bad happening to them. So, is kennel cough something you need to be worried about it?

WHAT IS KENNEL COUGH?

Kennel cough is a broad term often used to describe any infectious or contagious condition in dogs where coughing is one of the major clinical signs. Several viruses and bacteria can cause kennel cough, often simultaneously, including adenovirus type-2 (distinct from the adenovirus type-1 that causes infectious hepatitis), parainfluenza virus, canine influenza virus, canine coronavirus, and the bacterium Bordetella bronchiseptica. That’s why the technical term is canine infectious respiratory disease complex (CIRDC).

The infection usually spreads when dogs are together, especially indoors. It is often noticed soon after dogs spend time in kennels, hence the name “kennel cough”.

WHAT ARE THE SIGNS OF CIRDC?

Clinical signs of CIRDC vary. The disease is often mild, though the cough may be chronic, sometimes lasting several weeks. Common signs include:

a loud cough, often described as a “goose honk”
runny eyes and nose
swollen tonsils
wheezing
lack of appetite
depressed behavior

The cough may look more like retching in some cases, and the dog may cough up froth that could be mistaken for vomit. Most dogs with CIRDC cough when the throat is rubbed or palpated, and during and after exercise.

In most cases, a dog with CIRDC recovers within one to two weeks. However, pneumonia can occur, especially in immunocompromised pets, including puppies, senior dogs, and brachycephalic dogs (like French bulldogs and pugs). Signs of pneumonia include obvious lethargy, fever, a wet cough, and difficulty breathing.

HOW DOES A DOG GET CIRDC?

CIRDC is very contagious. Dogs can spread it before they show any signs of disease, and they may never show signs of disease. CIRDC is spread through respiratory droplets (from a cough or sneeze), so dogs readily transmit it through casual contact, such as sniffing each other when on a walk, playing, or sharing water dishes.

Some of the infectious organisms can survive for a long time in the environment, so it’s possible to spread it even without dog-to-dog contact, such as contact with people’s hands or other contaminated surfaces. Certain factors increase the likelihood of your dog contracting CIRDC, including stress, poor ventilation, and crowded conditions.

HOW CAN I PROTECT MY DOG FROM CIRDC?

Make sure your dog is up to date with their recommended vaccines, including adenovirus and parainfluenza. If your dog is around any other dogs (boarding, grooming, dog park), they should also have a parainfluenza vaccination at least yearly. Bordetella vaccination is also highly recommended for these higher risk dogs. Your veterinarian may also recommend vaccination for canine influenza, depending on your dog’s lifestyle and environment. Discuss specific vaccination recommendations for your dog with your veterinarian.
Keep informed of any outbreaks of canine disease in your community. Your veterinarian is often the best resource for this. Other resources include veterinary school websites and your state or provincial animal health departments/ministries.
In an outbreak situation, try to avoid dog group contact where possible, including dog parks, daycare, and boarding facilities.
Wash your hands regularly, and especially after petting someone else’s dog.
Plan ahead: If you are travelling with your dog, check to the state or provincial animal health departments/ministries see if that community is experiencing any CIRDC outbreaks.

SHOULD I BE WORRIED ABOUT CIRDC OUTBREAKS?

Outbreaks of CIRDC are not a new phenomenon. The infectious organisms responsible for this disease constantly circulate through the environment in North America, much like human cold and flu viruses. Social media has allowed us to spread information about our pets’ health much further and faster than ever before, prompting a heightened awareness and an increased anxiety in pet owner communities. Contact your veterinary team to ensure your dog’s vaccinations are up to date and report any concerns.

IS CIRDC CONTAGIOUS TO HUMANS?

It is uncommon, but Bordetella bronchiseptica can affect people, most often those who are immunocompromised. Contact your doctor if you don’t feel well.
